Energy Efficient CFL fire Hazard?

by on Sep.14, 2013, under Electronics

I noticed something wasn’t right with this light when it failed so I opened it up.
Electronics totally burned up
Inside plastic is burned.
The irony is the burn almost went though the UL label
inside plastic is covered with burn marks
The CFL it self is melted! This had to get quite hot to do that!
The other side of the electronics.

    Mr Moogle,
I did the research(though it was a while ago an I no longer remember my sources), and what I discovered is that the UL marking does not mean that the electronics won’t catch fire, it merely means that they have certified that when it fails catastrophically, the housing will safely contain the resulting fire. And yes, I used ‘when’ on purpose. It’s well known that one of the failure modes of a EOL CFL is self combustion.
